Local Agents
Nongpho, a sub-district in Ratchaburi province, Thailand, is likewise many villages in the world nowadays that abandoned ancestors’ livelihood such as the rice farming, replaced with new expertise that introduced and supported by the government, in its case: the dairy farming agriculture. However, current intensive global economic system has affected villagers’ lives and career stability, encountering the difficulty to maintain the land and balance the income. Therefore, the aim to create art and cultural activities under Cultural Politics of Gramsci Study is developed with the title: Local Agents (A Model Study for Nongpo Community) project.
According to Joseph Beuys (b. 1921-1986): creativity is capital and Antonio Francesco Gramsci (b. 1891-1937): the superstructure has predominated people’s daily life within the capitalist society. Yet, the concept of analyzing the structures of problems enables us to discover that the rationalization that dominates people’s common sense is a formulated thing. It decelerates or influences people to decline to question towards the power relevant to them.
Local Agents intends to create a knowledge platform with artistic practice and encourage local productive force and relation of production through existed social relation that interconnect diverse groups and classes to shape immunity of civil society, convey own cultural politic structure over the superstructure and liberate from capitalism which take over the market.
Local Agents is day OFF LABoratory # 3/2018, annual art project by Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture.

“Social Plastic” sub-project is a part of “Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community” project. This project is designed to promote collaboration and engagement of the Nongpho community members. Banze and Falk conducted a fieldwork by traveling to the community and collected plastic wastes from local households. They then built 7-meter high and 5-meter wide stupa from the wastes, signifying how large the number of plastic wastes produced by the community was. Their creation allows the community members to clearly see the total number of unrecyclable and non-degradable plastic wastes. This unveiled truth has led to new ideas and bilateral collaboration to search for a way to sort out and reduce the number of plastic wastes, and that was the how a pilot project named “Plastic Killer” started. The two artists worked with Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture, Wat Nongpho community school, and Nongpho municipality office and aimed to sort out and reduce the number of plastic wastes within the timeframe of 2 years. Moreover, the stupa had also become a symbolic representation, inviting the community members to participate and become an eye-witness of the “Plastic Funeral”. The funeral was completed with funeral chanting by monks from Nongpho temple, and live traditional dance performance from Nongpho community’s Thai traditional dance troupe. Teachers, students, and locals from Nongpho community all joined as co-host of this rite.

โครงการ Social Plastic เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการหนองโพ: ชุมชนมือทำ (Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community) ตัวโครงการถูกออกแบบให้เกิดความร่วมมือและการมีส่วนร่วมของผู้คนในชุมชนหนองโพ บันซี และฟอล์ก ได้ทำงานภาคสนามโดยลงพื้นที่ชุมชน รวบรวมขยะพลาสติกจากครัวเรือน เพื่อนำมาสร้างเป็นสถูปขนาดความสูง 7 เมตร ฐานกว้าง 5 เมตร สถูปดังกล่าวได้ตอกย้ำปริมาณจำนวนขยะพลาสติกที่ชุมชนผลิตขึ้นในแต่ละวัน มันทำให้เห็นภาพรวมของปริมาณขยะพลาสติกที่ไม่สามารถทำลายหรือนำกลับไปใช้ให้ปรากฏต่อสายตา ความเป็นจริงที่ปรากฏดังกล่าวนั้นได้นำไปสู่แนวคิดและความร่วมมือในระดับทวิภาคีต่อการค้นหาแนวทางที่จะคัดแยก และลดทอนปริมาณการผลิตขยะพลาสติกของชุมชน ด้วยโครงการนำร่องที่ชื่อว่า พลาสติกคิลเลอร์ ซึ่งศิลปินทั้งสองทำงานร่วมกับบ้านนอก ความร่วมมือทางศิลปวัฒนธรรม โรงเรียนชุมชนวัดหนองโพ วัดหนองโพ และเทศบาลตำบลหนองโพโดยมีเป้าหมายที่จะคัดแยกและลดปริมาณการผลิตขยะพลาสติกให้ได้ ภายใต้กรอบระยะเวลา 2 ปี นอกจากนั้นตัวสถูปยังทำหน้าที่เชิงสัญลักษณ์ ในการเชื้อเชิญผู้คนในชุมชนให้เข้ามามีบทบาทและเป็นสักขีพยานร่วมในพิธีฌาปณกิจพลาสติก โดยความร่วมมือจากภิกษุสงฆ์วัดหนองโพ เจริญพระพุทธมนต์สวดมาติกาบังสุกุล คณะนาฏยศิลป์ชุมชนหนองโพแสดงสดนาฏยกรรมไทย นักเรียนและคณาจารย์โรงเรียนชุมชนวัดหนองโพ และชาวชุมชนหนองโพ ร่วมกันเป็นเจ้าภาพในพิธีกรรมครั้งนี้

Ratchaburi Movement Orchestra Project

The old community of Ratchaburi plays an important role in the creation of Thai pottery. This time, the project “Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community” aims to create the song of collaboration and friendship that connects local people with pottery—in a sense that it is one of the appliances they use on a daily basis. This is the collaboration between the community members and the artists who come together to create rhythms and melodies and express their unity with orchestral music. Jatiwangi Art Factory from Indonesia led the creative work process and conducted workshops with young members of Nongpho and jar communities from Ratchaburi province. Ryan Chen, a composer and violinist from Taiwan assumed the role of conductor and worked with an orchestra band from Wat Nongpho Community school to arrange the music piece. Kanun, a representative from Thailand took part in this project by adding his electronic sounds; while Ratthawit, another representative from Thailand joined the band using pottery—pots, vases, plates, jars—as his percussion instrument. Last but not least to join this collaboration was Damri, the community musician who, in his ordinary days, works as a wall painter to earn a living. All of them worked together to create a concept for the live performance of their band “Ratchaburi Movement Orchestra”. They have shown the strengths of people and community that strive to participate and express their own cultural politics ideology using their creative lyrics improvisation and traditional Thai songs.

ราชบุรี ชุมชนเก่าแก่ผู้ริเริ่มสร้างสรรค์งานเครื่องปั้นดินเผาที่มีความสำคัญแห่งหนึ่งในประเทศไทย โครงการชุมชนมือทำ กรณีศึกษาชุมชนหนองโพ (Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community) ครั้งนี้มีแนวทางในการสร้างสรรค์เสียงเพลงแห่งความร่วมมือ ความผูกพันที่เชื่อมโยงตนเองกับเครื่องปั้นดินเผาในฐานะเครื่องใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน เป็นความร่วมมือกันของชุมชนและศิลปิน กอปรขึ้นเป็นท่วงทำนองและจังหวะอันแสดงออกถึงความสามัคคีร่วมใจเป็นหนึ่งเดียวด้วยรูปแบบ ออร์เคสตรา โดยมีกลุ่มศิลปิน จาติวางี อาร์ต แฟคทอรี (Jatiwangi Art Factory) จากประเทศอินโดนีเซีย เป็นแกนนำในงานสร้างสรรค์เครื่องดนตรีดินเผาและการอบรมเชิงปฏิบัติการร่วมกับเยาวชนในชุมชนหนองโพ และชุมชนโรงโอ่งจังหวัดราชบุรี ไรอัน เฉิน นักประพันธ์และนักไวโอลีน จากประเทศไต้หวัน ทำหน้าที่วาทยากร และเรียบเรียงเสียงประสานร่วมกับนักเรียนวงดุริยางค์โรงเรียนชุมชนวัดหนองโพ ขณะที่ กนันท์ จากประเทศไทย เข้าร่วมเสริมและแทรกเสียงบรรยากาศด้วยเครื่องดนตรีอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ ประกอบกับ รัฐวิชญ์ จากประเทศไทยผู้ร่วมปฏิบัติการเครื่องเคาะดินเผา เช่น กระถาง โอ่ง ไห จานชาม ฯลฯ และที่สำคัญ ดำริ นักดนตรีของชุมชนซึ่งมีอาชีพหลักเป็นช่างทาสี พวกเขาทั้งหมดได้รวมกันค้นหาแนวทางในการแสดงสด Ratchaburi Movement Orchestra เพื่อยืนหยัดความเข้มแข็งภาคประชาสังคมในการมีส่วนร่วม และแสดงออกแนวคิดเชิงวัฒนธรรมการเมืองของตนเอง ผ่านการด้นสดบทเพลงสร้างสรรค์ ร่วมกับบทเพลงไทยเดิม

The local community market “Local Agents Express” is the common space of social relations— a social, economic, and cultural politics space where common people who are living in Nongpho Community and residents from neighboring areas can share and utilize to earn a living as well as to purchase food and daily necessities. The project “Local Agents: Model Study for Nongpho Community” has created the space for convenient knowledge sharing and gathering to promote creativity, as well as methodological and practical knowledge sharing in the community. The aim is to enable the community members to become a “Local Agent” –a creator, a manufacturer and a consumer who can negotiate with capitalists and government agents that control and monopolize the market. Through the collaboration of artists and activists participated in this project, the community development process is established. The process that is done for and by the community has empowered its members to gain more control over their lives and strive to become a player or an agent within the neoliberalism system– the system that holds a free competition and good governance as its universal code of conducts. The participated artists and activists conducted a fieldwork, arranged workshops, and shared various manufacturing knowledge and methodologies to offer more alternatives to the community, so as to encourage them to become an agent and co-create their own cultural-politics capital.

Local Agents Express ตลาดนัดชุมชน พื้นที่กลางของความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคม (Social relation) ที่สามัญชนผู้อาศัยอยู่ร่วมกันภายในชุมชนหนองโพและผู้คนบริเวณใกล้เคียง ใช้ประโยชน์ร่วมกันเพื่อการดำรงชีพ จับจ่ายซื้อหาสิ่งของเครื่องอุปโภคและบริโภคสำหรับชีวิตประจำวัน เป็นพื้นที่ส่วนกลางทางสังคม เศรษฐกิจและการเมืองเชิงวัฒนธรรม โครงการชุมชนมือทำ: กรณีศึกษาชุมชนหนองโพ (Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community) ได้นำเสนอพื้นที่สะดวกเรียน-สะดวกรู้ (Conveniences Knowledge) เพื่อเสริมสร้างจินตนาการ แนวทางวิธี และกระบวนปฏิบัติให้แก่ชุมชนในการเป็นผู้สร้างสรรค์ ผู้ผลิต และผู้อุปโภค-บริโภค ในความหมายของการเป็น ”ชุมชนมือทำ” ให้สามารถต่อรองกับทุนและรัฐที่ควบคุมและผูกขาดการค้าการตลาด ด้วยการพัฒนาชุมชนให้มีอำนาจในการบริหารจัดการตนเอง และร่วมเป็นผู้เล่นหรือผู้กระทำ (Agents) ในระบบเสรีนิยมใหม่ซึ่งเปิดให้การแข็งขันเสรีและธรรมภิบาลเป็นกติกาสากล ด้วยการจัดตั้งกระบวนการพัฒนาชุมชนเพื่อชุมชนโดยชุมชน ผ่านความร่วมมือจากกลุ่มศิลปินและนักขับเคลื่อนกิจกรรมรับเชิญ (artists and activists) ลงพื้นที่จัดกิจกรรมอบรมเชิงปฏิบัติการ สร้างเสริมแนวทางความรู้ในสายการผลิตหลากหลายแนวคิด เพื่อสร้างทางเลือกให้กับชุมชน ในฐานะเป็นผู้ลงมือกระทำและร่วมกันสร้างสรรค์ทุนทางวัฒนธรรมการเมืองของตนเอง (Creativity is capital)
Futurist Community painting project

An insect on decaying leaves in the hands of a small girl—an image that many of you might be familiar with—has become a collective imagery shared by the people in a community who have learned and seen themselves through their past, their present, and their goal in the future. This symbolic image reflects liveliness and youthfulness which are an important basis for the development and growth of this community. The three artists have worked together to weave all the components together and create a huge mural painting on the wall, signifying the continuity of time in which many generations of people have been living together in this old community. The decaying leaves are the truth of life that is inseparable from the flow of time, the pattern on the insect’s body is so detailed that it perfectly blends with the background— delicate Thai traditional style painting of leaves swaying gently in the breeze. One can see the girl’s eyes looking at the community as if seeking for love and tenderness, calling for mutual collaboration and sharing to create the multicultural environment.

แมลงตัวหนึ่งบนใบไม้ผุกร่อนในมือเด็กหญิงตัวเล็กๆ ซึ่งหลายต่อหลายคนคุ้นเคยกลายเป็นจินตภาพร่วมกันของชุมชน ซึ่งมีพัฒนาการการเรียนรู้และมองตนเองผ่านอดีต ปัจจุบันและเป้าหมายในอนาคต คือภาพเชิงสัญลักษณ์ที่แสดงออกผ่านความสดใสน่ารักของวัยเยาว์ ซึ่งมีความหมายต่อการเจริญเติบโตและพัฒนาการของชุมชน ศิลปินทั้งสามท่านได้ร่วมกันร้อยเรียงและถักทอภาพจิตรกรรมบนฝาผนังขนาดใหญ่ เพื่อยืนยันถึงความต่อเนื่องของช่วงเวลาในการอยู่รวมกันของผู้คนหลายช่วงอายุในชุมชนเก่าแก่แห่งนี้ ใบไม้ที่ผุกร่อนคือความเป็นจริงตามธรรมชาติแห่งกาลเวลา ส่วนลวดลายของแมลงที่มีรายละเอียดมาก ได้พลิ้วกลืนไปกับพฤกษาในแบบจิตรกรรมไทยที่สะบัดไหวตามแรงลมโชยอ่อน ปรากฏดวงตาของเด็กน้อยที่มองมายังชุมชนประหนึ่งออดอ้อนความรักความห่วงใย โดยเรียกร้องให้เกิดความร่วมมือ และการแบ่งปันซึ่งกันและกันในแบบพหุวัฒนธรรม

Interaction Between Light and Illusion
Local Agents of Light is the project that aims to develop light and sound system of local temple fairs and festivals. It is one of the sub-projects of “Local Agents: Model Study for Nongpho Community” project, in which the two artists are invited to present their personal works as well as artworks that they collaborated with the technician who does lighting decorations for temple fairs and festivals in Nongpho community. The two parties worked together to develop a lighting system for decorating public spaces, presenting their own forms and inventions of light and movement. By using fluorescent light bulbs, a ready-made electronic device, they connect their creation with a DIY process and emphasize minimalist creativity process. The same goes for Dan Flavin who seeks new methods and possibilities of creating light and animated visual system by developing upon the existing foundation created by Pha Ruam Monk of Nongpho temple, who had developed the lighting system for religious rites and community festivals back in the 1970s.

Local Agents of Light คือโครงการขับเคลื่อนระบบแสงสีสำหรับงานวัดหรือเทศกาล เป็นโครงการย่อยของโครงการ ชุมชนมือทำ: กรณีศึกษาชุมชนหนองโพ (Local Agents: Model Study for Nongpho Community) ซึ่งศิลปินทั้งสองท่านได้รับเชิญเข้าร่วมนำเสนอผลงานส่วนบุคคล และผลงานศิลปะความร่วมมือกับช่างไฟฟ้าเทคนิคสำหรับประดับตกแต่งในงานวัดและเทศกาลต่างๆ ในชุมชนหนองโพ พวกเขาร่วมกันพัฒนาระบบแสงประดับติดตั้งในพื้นที่สาธารณะ แสดงออกรูปแบบและแนวทางการประดิษฐ์สร้างแสงและการเคลื่อนไหว เพื่อเชื่อมโยงกระบวนการ DIY ตอกย้ำแนวทางสร้างสรรค์ลักษณะน้อยนิยม (minimalist) ในการใช้หลอดฟลูออเรสเซนต์วัสดุสำเร็จรูปเชิงอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ เช่นเดียวกับ Dan Flavin เป็นการค้นหาแนวทางและความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ ของระบบแสงและภาพเคลื่อนไหว ต่อยอดจากอดีตของชุมชนหนองโพ ซึ่งหลวงพ่อรวมแห่งวัดหนองโพเป็นผู้คิดค้น และพัฒนาขึ้นใช้ในงานพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาและเทศกาลของชุมชนหนองโพในช่วงทศวรรษที่ 1970
Local Phonetic Mapping and Sound Agents project

Nongpho district is no different from other communities in the provincial areas of Thailand where people in the community are growing up with the experience of local music and songs, especially the Thai folk songs that are played through the amplifiers during temple fairs and other merit-making activities of the community. These sounds and music play important roles in many aspects of the society, it could be for entertainment, for lyrics interpretation, and most importantly, they are an instrument for informing the villagers about time arrangement and occasion of festivals and merit-making activities in the village, so that everybody — volunteers, participants, and their families– can get themselves prepared for the events. In the project “Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community” Atsuchi and Pasuth, artists specialized in improvising live music and lighting performances, have collected many folk songs and string them together using their own styles to communicate contents, rhythms, and melodies that can connect audiences-listeners to the place with their historical consciousness. They use the past as a foundation for the present and generate questions for the future. Emphasizing the meaning of sound and moving image, while at the same time compromising the concept of liberal democracy and the protection of individual rights amidst the wave of globalization that holds localism as an important, inseparable part of its solid foundation.

ชุมชนหนองโพคงไม่ต่างจากชุมชนอื่นๆ ตามต่างจังหวัดที่ซึ่งผู้คนในชุมชนเติบโตและมีประสบการณ์ร่วมกับเสียงดนตรีและบทเพลง โดยเฉพาะเพลงลูกทุ่งที่ถูกขยายผ่านเครื่องเสียงจากงานวัด-งานบุญต่างๆ ของชุมชน เสียงเพลงเหล่านั้นทำหน้าที่ในหลายมิติทางสังคม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นไปเพื่อความบันเทิง ความหมายที่บทเพลงสอดแทรก และที่สำคัญมันถูกใช้เพื่อประโยชน์ในการแจ้งบอกวาระ และกำหนดเวลาของเทศกาลหรืองานบุญต่างๆ ในหมู่บ้าน เพื่อให้คนในชุมชนตระเตรียมตนเองเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม ทั้งกลุ่มจิตอาสาช่วยจัดงาน กลุ่มผู้ร่วมงานและญาติพี่น้อง โครงการชุมชนมือทำ: กรณีศึกษาชุมชนหนองโพ (Local Agents: Model study for Nongpho Community) อะสึชิ และพศุตม์ ศิลปินแสดงสดเสียงและแสง ได้รวบรวมบทเพลงลูกทุ่งมากมาย นำมาร้อยเรียงต่อเชื่อมกันในแนวทางของตนเพื่อสื่อสารเนื้อหา ทำนอง และจังหวะ ที่สามารถเชื่อมโยงผู้ชม-ผู้ฟังเข้ากับพื้นที่ด้วยสำนึกเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ พวกเขานำอดีตมารองรับปัจจุบันและตั้งคำถามไปสู่อนาคต ด้วยการตอกย้ำความหมายของเสียงและภาพเคลื่อนไหว (Sound and Moving image) ด้วยการต่อรองกับแนวคิดเสรีนิยมประชาธิปไตยและการพิทักษ์สิทธิของปัจเจกบุคคล ภายใต้โลกาภิวัฒน์ซึ่งมีท้องถิ่นนิยมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของฐานที่มั่นคงอย่างมิอาจแยกขาดจากกัน

ศิลปินทั้งสองท่าน Wei Loy & Zi-Yin ได้สร้างสรรค์กิจกรรมศิลปะการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชนหนองโพคิดดี ด้วยกระบวนการการสร้างเสียงดนตรีจากวัสดุเหลือใช้ เพื่อเป็นกลองตีประกอบจังหวะ ขณะเดียวกันศิลปินทั้งสอง ได้สร้างพื้นที่คู่ขนานในลักษณะโรงละครกลางแจ้งสาธารณะสำหรับผู้ชมโดยมีอาจแยกพื้นที่ออกจากความจริงชุดหนึ่ง แล้วผนวกเข้ากับนาฏกรรมแห่งชีวิตภายใต้ขอบฟ้าอันกว้างใหญ่
ละครเรื่อง นกต่างฟ้า เรื่องราวเชิงโศกนาฏกรรมของนกอพยพเข้าไปอยู่ในเมืองใหญ่ Wei Loy & Zi-Yin ได้เผยให้เห็นถึงบริบทของพื้นที่ทางภูมิศาสตร์เชื่อมโยงเข้ากับผู้ชม ด้วยแนวทางการแสดงล้อเรียนเชิงเสียดสี ตลกชวนหัว ทำให้การเข้าถึงตัวบทหรือสาระเป็นไปได้ ศิลปินได้พัฒนาเรื่องราวจากบทกวีของท่าน รพินทรนาถ ฐากุร ร่วมกับประสบการณ์ตรงและการเก็บสะสมตัวบท สร้างสรรค์เป็นละครเวทีกลางแจ้งภายในพื้นที่ชุมชนหนองโพ
ในแง่ของการใช้พื้นที่ศิลปินได้กำหนดให้ เทศะและสถานที่ (place and space) เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน ด้วยเหตุนี้ตัวบทที่ศิลปินแสดงออกมา สามารถแทรกซึมเข้าไปในดวงตาที่จับจ้องของผู้ชม ขณะนั้นความเป็นจริงภายนอกและความนึกคิดภายในได้บรรจบกัน แนวทางการออกแบบอุปกรณ์ประกอบฉากทั้งหมดนั้น ได้ถูกวางไว้บนพื้นฐานของสิ่งของใกล้ตัว เช่นกระดาษลัง และของเหลือใช้อื่นๆ สร้างจินตนาการให้ผู้ชมได้อย่างไม่เคาเขิน ประกอบดนตรีสดซึ่งผู้แสดงต้องสวมทับบทบาทสลับไปมา ดนตรีเครื่องเคาะนิ่งน่องให้เสียงใสกังวานพร้อมกลองชนิดเหยียบซึ่งดัดแปลงจากกระเป๋าเดินทางของศิลปินเองเป็นเครื่องคนตรี เป็นการผนวกรวมพื้นที่เชิงสำนึก และพื้นที่ในความเป็นไปได้ของจินตนาการ แห่งโลกเสมือนได้อย่างน่าสนใจ
